Iran States It Could Return to American Atomic Discussions if Handled with 'Dignity' and 'Respect'

Iran is ready to reinitiate nuclear discussions with Washington as long as it is approached with "dignity" and "respect", Iran's top diplomat has declared.

The Iranian diplomat said only diplomacy produced results, and revealed new appeals had originated from go-betweens to reopen talks with the American leadership. He claimed Iran possessed no undeclared nuclear sites, and Tehran could not yet authorize the International Atomic Energy Agency to inspect struck enrichment centers for security reasons.

Navigating a Challenging Course

The foreign minister is navigating a difficult path since Iran wishes not to be seen to be proceeding from a stance of disadvantage, and he insisted repeatedly that Iran had arisen more powerful defensively and psychologically from the joint assault on its enrichment centers in June.

He was talking at a strategic meeting in Tehran where he reaffirmed that Iran had "an inalienable right to refine atomic fuel on home soil that it will perpetually retain" – the primary cause of the impasse in the prior discussions.

Previous Talks Abruptly Concluded

The previous five rounds of discussions between the US and Iran were concluded unexpectedly and acrimonious end on 12 June when the Israeli government, with Washington's assistance, targeted Iran's enrichment centers in a fortnight-long engagement that ended with the American leader asserting the facilities had been destroyed. Following this, EU nations exercised their right to reimpose international penalties, but Iran insists they have not had a substantial consequence.

Iranian officials said they felt they had reached a "perfect agreement" to the enrichment issue in prior discussions, when it was settled an local partnership with Washington's engagement could enrich uranium. Each party would have been able to claim victory since domestic enrichment would have continued and the US could be confident that Iran's atomic project was solely for peaceful purposes.

The citizens of Tehran have become more resilient, more cohesive, and more endorsing of the leadership and the nation in the wake of this assault."
